The Overwhelming Need

In January this year, the Institute developed and launched the Emergency Care Program adapted for clinics.

We initially anticipated receiving a few dozen applications, but the response was eye-opening.

This remarkable level of interest, 115 organizations applied, not only underscores the significant demand for this program but also highlights a critical issue they are seeing: a troubling rise in patients experiencing miscarriage.

Numerous applicants expressed uncertainty and concern about how to effectively support their patients during these experiences, revealing a desperate need for specialized training in compassionate, trauma-informed care.

This first cohort consists of 334 total staff and volunteers that see about 22,000 patients per year. Over 60% of their patients are low to poverty income levels.

  • “Our clinic sees high rates of pregnancy loss, and offering resources for those affected has become a priority. Also, the staff does not feel equipped to handle these situations adequately.”

  • “Our main challenge is that our support staff doesn't always feel equipped to communicate well with those experiencing a pregnancy loss. Our nurses do a wonderful job with caring for the clients if they detect a miscarriage during the ultrasound but beyond that, we are limited in how to show care/support to clients that may inform us of a pregnancy loss during a follow-up.”

  • “Unable to reach clients in a follow up contact. Part of our protocol is referring patients to the ED at a local hospital. It is hard to provide all the support we would like, when the handoff is not always a well trusted environment when it comes to compassionate care.”

  • “Out of the 1,650 new clients last year, 300 self-reported having one or more abortions, and over 1,000 reported experiencing one or more miscarriages. As we were preparing this grant, a woman walked into our HQ to donate diapers. She had just experienced the traumatic, unexpected loss of her first child – a little boy – at 38 weeks of pregnancy. I had few words to offer this heartbroken woman and the grieving grandmother. They had been referred to us by a local hospital to donate baby supplies she would not need. With this grant, we plan to be more prepared to help more hurting parents in our community.”

After the training.

  • “As a healthcare professional I do not want to further traumatize the patient by making assumptions, using unnecessary clinical language, or minimizing the significance of the event. I learned to also acknowledge the father and others in the woman’s inner circle who may be present.”
